Four Year Olds
By the time your child leaves the 4-year-old classroom, he/she should be able to:
• Separate from parents easily without crying
• Follow and cut on a line with scissors
• Draw a person with a head, body, arms, and legs
• Stand on one foot, and hop on one foot
• Walk backward without falling down
• Know the 8 basic colors
• Use sentences of at least 5 words
• Make up imaginary stories and tell them to others
• Follow a sequence of three simple instructions
• Recognize and name all of the coins
• Count objects at least up to 10
• Recognize all of the basic shapes, including circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, ovals, and diamond
• Be competitive
• Get dressed and undressed by him/herself, including tying or buckling his/her shoes
• Clean up his/ her space and put things in their proper places
• Go to the bathroom by him/herself and clean him/herself, including washing hands
• Play well with others, including sharing and taking turns
